VoIP - How does it work?

There are two ways to make calls over the Internet. Either both parties communicate via their computers with the right VoIP software installed, or the call is made through a so-called gateway service. In the latter case, a user initiates the call from his computer that is connected to the Internet and equipped with a VoIP programme. A gateway server transforms the IP signals into regular telephone signals and passes them on to the fixed or mobile line. The receiving party will hardly notice a difference to a regular call.

The hardware for your IP calls

To make calls over the Internet, you have two possibilities. For the first you need a headset with a microphone or separate earphones and a microphone attached to your computer. An easy and efficient method, but it leaves you stuck at your workplace.

Cordless convenience for your Internet calls

The second possibility is really good news as today there are cordless telephones with an option for VoIP telephony like the new Gigasets. With these, you can make your calls just as comfortably as with a regular phone. Meaning you can walk around the house freely and talk to the other party, and you can dial your numbers as usual or use the phone directory of the cordless handset.

Internet calls from wherever you are

With Internet telephony you will become even more independent of the fixed-line network, as you can also use it in combination with your laptop. All you have to do is log in to a public WLAN at a hotspot, whose numbers are growing continually all around the world, and you can make Internet calls with your headset. Your buddy lists are available even at hotspots.
