Free international phone calls – does it really work?

Is it really true? Can we call our family members in other continents for free? And do we really never have to pay long distance charges again?

Well, yes.
The four magic letters VoIP have revolutionized the way we talk to others on the phone. Instead of utilizing existing telephone lines to establish connections, VoIP simply uses the internet to facilitate telephony. VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol standard.

When making VoIP calls, a connection to the recipient is established via the digital data gateway of the internet. The voices of the two parties are then digitalized and sent within milliseconds – depending on the internet connection speed of the caller and recipient. Due to its digital format, the quality of VoIP calls is usually better than when calling via landline.

It is now even possible to make VoIP calls from common telephone devices. Special Gateways are connected to both the regular phone network and the internet. Thus they can bring the free pleasure of VoIP telephony to any phone and pretty much any household.

In the future there won’t be an excuse anymore for not calling your grandmother on her birthday. Or for not phoning your family from your vacation. At least not the excuse that it is too expansive to call…
