Free VoIP calls worldwide with Gigaset.net

Siemens Gigaset has created a new way for friends and acquaintances to keep in touch worldwide and free of charge. Gigaset.net is a VoIP service for all users of the latest Gigaset IP phones. Network participation requires no additional registration and as soon as the Gigaset phone has been set up, it enables calls with other members of the Gigaset.net community as well as fast access to an online phonebook containing all registered members.

Effective immediately, Gigaset.net gives users of the latest Siemens Gigaset IP phones access to a third form of telephony. In addition to the fixed network and Internet telephony via a provider, users can now phone for free within the Gigaset.net community thanks to a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) server set up expressly for that purpose. To get started in Gigaset.net, users do not have to register with a provider, nor do they have to adjust any additional settings. The only prerequisite for making free calls is a DSL connection with a flat-rate contract. Each member of the community is automatically registered in Gigaset.net with his or her device number. As soon as the phone is set up, the user can start making free calls with other Gigaset.net members, whose numbers are all listed in an online phonebook.

All Gigaset.net numbers are recognizable by the suffix #9, making it simple to identify other members of the Gigaset.net community. Users can search for a contact either by number or by special nicknames, which each member can define and enter in the online phonebook. Personal Gigaset.net contacts can also be stored in the local phonebook.

“With the Siemens Gigaset C450 IP, C455 IP or S450 IP, users can keep in touch with friends, family members and colleagues free of charge, anywhere in the world at any time. Phoning via Gigaset.net is the first step and will be followed by even more services for the Gigaset.net community,” said Godehard Gerling, Vice President Product Management Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices .

Customers who already own a Gigaset C450 IP (models manufactured in July 2006 or later) or a Gigaset S450 IP can access Gigaset.net by means of a software update. The update takes just a touch of a single key on the handset.

Even if there's so many SIP proxys in the Internet World now, I think gigaset.net is a nice idea because it's really a easy way to register to an intl proxy.
But something is unclear. Is there a way to contact gigaset.net from other SIP providers (peering) ? Or could we make call to gigaset.net users using a non-siemens SIP phone (soft or hard) ?

DO NOT upgrade your C450IP to the latest level of firmware if you have any third party handset registered to the C450IP base station.

After this upgrade, only Siemens handsets (Or Siemens made handsets) will be able to register

I'm now waiting since two months they fix the bug which came with the 1057 firmware level mid february...

Nice feature, one of the main reasons I bought this phone.

Unfortunately, it's not enabled if you buy e.g. a S450 IP phone from the official Dutch Siemens distributor. They've decided *not* to enable this feature.

I haven't found a way to enable this myself... yet.

I'm registered on gigaset.net, and also a friend.

Vhen i call its gigaset phone with its gigaset number (xxxxxxxx#9), i get the code 480 (number temporary unavailable).

He get the same error code when he calls my gigaset number.

1234#9 works properly.
