
Yesterday a buried Seed Vault officially opened up in Spitsbergen (Norway). The "natural bunker" is located 130m inside a mountain on the Arctic island and built to store up to 4,5 million seeds in total.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jen Stoltenberg and Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai placed the first seeds in the depository during the inauguration ceremony. The claim of the Seed Vault is to protect the existing flora for future generations.
