Audience Special 9 - Switching between Fixed Line and VoIP Calls

Bugs and improvement proposals

Please find below a nice field report about switching between fixed line and VoIP calls with a Siemens Gigaset telephone. Chris describes in a nice way first his problems and then asks for improvement:

Dear Moritz,

I have a house in rural France. The services (water, electricity, telephone, and ADSL/broadband) are not 100% reliable, they often go off for no reason and then re-appear some time later. On Monday last week my broadband stopped working. I tried my utmost to encourage a fast repair, but I failed. So now when I pick up the phone it says 'Provider Registration failed'. If I want to make a call I have to press the top right-hand button which I have programmed to make a 'Fixed Line Call'.
Then I can get the number from the directory and make the call using the fixed line. I am sure that you have many thousands of customers in all over Europe who like me, have their broadband and perhaps land line service temporally interrupted and need an automatic solution.

So this is my improvement suggestion - In the configuration process, put in a new screen that allows the user to select (by tick box or radio button) the following options - 'Default to fixed line call if VoIP call not available' Also it should have the option to 'Default to VoIP call if fixed line not available'. Remember that you might have a user in a big city who has broadband delivered by cable, in this case, if the fixed line fails, then the obvious choice would be to default to VoIP. In my case I would be really impressed if the phone told me that it was making a default fixed line call because VoIP had failed, and it then proceeded to make the call. It would be stunning Siemens technology.

My experience in being forced to make a fixed line calls has exposed two basic faults. First I select a fixed line call by pressing the top left had button (which I have pre-programmed to select fixed line). I then search for the number in the directory. When I find the number, I press dial and the call is initiated. Fine. No problem. But, if the entry has more than one phone number, for example a fixed line home, a business fixed line and a cellphone (handy), I then select the number, lets say the cellphone, the number is not entered and no call takes place.
Then the second fault occurs, the firmware hangs up. Repeatedly pressing the 'end call' (red telephone symbol) shows that the phone is stuck in a non working state or hung up as I call it. Holding the 'end call' button down for a few seconds will clear the problem.

Thanks again Chris for your input!

This is exactly what is needed. Why this feature is not already in the phone is beyond me.

I 'm sure the source of your trouble stands in the beginging of your message :
"I have a house in rural France."
Try once something else.

Probieren sie etwas anderes.
In Bayern z.b.

Mit freundlichem Grüsse

Jean
